Lines Written in a Mesa Verde Campground
Jupiter and Venus Above Mesa Verde
Lines Written in a Mesa Verde Campground
Jupiter has launched
Himself high above the peaks
Beneath him Lady Venus
Climbs, following his lead.
They dance upward together
In the sun’s dying glow
Then blackness envelopes
And their beauty
Is fully shown.
Far beneath these sparkling worlds
The mountains rest
Their arms
Wrapped around the valley where
Crickets play their harps.
The coyotes’ crooning chorus
Floats over the hill
And from the silver sagebrush
Comes a gentle poor will
Poor will.
And there in the quiet campground
Two sit by dying embers
She looks upon
The heavenly lights
But it’s on her that his gaze lingers.
The roof of stars rotates
Over them the whole night long
While they join their hushed voices to
The Colorado mountain song.
