A Gardener’s Prayer
Mamaw’s Hibiscus
Lord, make me like the hibiscus
That opens daily for the sun
And closes its blooms every night
When no growing can be done.
Lord, make me like the roses
That protect their blooms with barbs
Making sure their vibrant flowers
Are safe from things that harm.
Lord, make me like the clematis
Climbing—reaching for the sun
Eagerly leaping up the trellis
Until its growing days are done.
Lord, make me like the chrysanthemum
That flowers late in the year
Bringing color to the darkening days
When the winter sleep draws near.
Lord, make me like the pine tree
Tall, strong, evergreen.
It weathers winter’s coldest days
Waiting calmly for the spring.
Lord, make me like the daffodil
The first to rise and take a breath
Joyfully lifting its yellow head
After winter’s temporary death.
Lord, plant me within your garden wall
Prune away my withered leaves
Give me your fresh life-giving water
Warm sun, good soil, cool breeze.
Nourish me gently and let me forever be
Your little flower among great trees.
